Clomiphene is used to cause ovulation in women who do not frequently ovulate or do not ovulate at all, including women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Clomid Dosage and Administration

Adult premenopausal females

  • Initially, take 50 mg by mouth once daily for 5 days starting on the 5th day after the start of withdrawal or menstrual bleeding or at any time in women who have not had recent bleeding. The dose can be increased to 100mg by mouth once daily for 5 days with the next cycle if ovulation did not occur, but wait at least 30 days before starting this next dose.
  • Initial doses may need to be lower (25mg) in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.
  • Do not exceed 100mg per day. Do not take longer than 5 days per 30 days. Do not exceed more than 6 cycles of treatment. If the patient does not get pregnant within a total of 6 cycles, discontinue the drug. Reevaluate patient if ovulation does not occur within 3 cycles of treatment.

Idiopathic oligospermia in men

There are no adequate or well-controlled studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of clomiphene citrate in the treatment of male infertility. Furthermore, males using clomiphene have reported testicular tumors and gynecomastia. The following dose-recommendation is considered an off-label use:

  • Take 25 mg by mouth once daily for 25 days followed by 5 days ┐off┐ (without drug) each month.
  • Alternate-day therapy of 25 mg by mouth every other day is also used.

Clomid Warnings, Side Effects and Potential Drug Interactions

    Do not take if pregnant and be sure to exclude pregnancy before starting medication. Pregnancy Category X and not recommended in patients who are breastfeeding. Contraindicated in patients with abnormal or dysfunctional uterine bleeding of undetermined origin Should not be given to patients with enlarged ovaries or preexisting ovarian cysts not caused by polycystic ovarian syndrome. Contraindicated in patients with liver disease or dysfunction. Could cause dizziness or blurred vision so be careful operating machinery or driving until you are familiar with your body's reaction to the medication. Avoid excess alcohol or tobacco consumption since they will decrease the effectiveness of the medication. Common side effects: hot flashes, mild pelvic discomfort, nausea, breast tenderness
